Know Word Meanings when Using Other Apps with Define

Define is a dictionary app that lets you know the meaning of words by copying the text inside any app and without leaving it. The application is built by Workarounds and it is available in the Google Play Store for free with no In-app purchases.

Simply, Copy the word and its definition shows up in the notification bar. You can change how the notification appear in the settings. In addition to that, you can know the synonyms and usages.

Great Day Readers! To give more insights into the application, Manideep, co-founder responded with answers. Here are the Q&A exclusively for our readers.

1. Tell us about the team?

We are four people and we used to run an app studio called Workarounds.  Along with external projects, we also gave time to our own ideas like define. We were initially two (Myself and Madhu Kiran) and later Nithin and Chandra Mouli (part time) joined us.

2. What was your inspiration that leads to the creation of Define?

It was inspired from iOS. Madhu is an avid reader and he wanted the ability to define a word with leaving the reader app in Android like he can on iOS. We initially thought we would restrict the app to work only on Reading apps and browsers. But later we added Urban Dictionary which is very useful chatting with people and they use "Urban" lingo.

3. What was the biggest challenge faced while developing Define?

We had a goal of having 0 memory footprint in the background like WhatsApp used to in KitKat. Later, in Lollipop, the system is aggressive at caching. We never want to run in the background, we just wanted to be alive. And we think we achieved that goal.

4. What features can be expected in the upcoming updates?

We are looking to make an API like muzei and dashclock, where there can be extension apps which can add content and functionality to the app. We hope this will give rise to translation extensions for various languages which is one of our most requested features.

5. Is there anything else you want to tell our readers?

We have open sourced define (https://github.com/workarounds/define). So anybody who is interested in hacking a small feature or fix an annoying bug. We will accept you pull requests. For our users, get in touch with us on twitter @manidesto and @madkixyz, we always welcome your feedback. And I would like to thank those users who emailed us about how much they like the app and said that it is exactly what they have been wanting.
